Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Waived: lack of pyrophoric functional groups.
4,4'-MDI is considered to be:
* not highly flammable
* Not flammable in contact with water
* not pyrophoric
The addition of the prepolymer is not expected to change the flammability results.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

In accordance with Column 2 of REACh Annex VII, and with ECHA Ch 7a guidance, the testing of flammability on contact with water is not necessary as the MDI/DPG/TPG substance does not contain known pyrophoric groups or compounds as listed in Bretherick's Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards. The lack of flammable properties is demonstrated through testing of the analogous substance 4,4'-MDI. Three flammability tests were performed with the test substance, 4,4'-MDI. In the first test, flammability of solids was assessed according to EU Method A.10 (Baker, 2010). In the second test, flammability in contact with water was assessed according to EU method A.12 (Baker, 2010). The third test assessed the pyrophoric properties of the test substance according to EU method A.13 (Baker, 2010). The results of these tests were that the test substance is not flammable, not flammable in contact with water and has no pyrophoric properties.

The addition of the prepolymer is not expected to change the flammability results.
