Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
Since no studies investigating the toxicity of fatty acids, C16-18 (even numbered) and C16-18unsatd. (even numbered), mono-, diesters with neopentyl glycol and di-, triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS 85186-92-1) to freshwater algae are available for this endpoint, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read across to structurally related category members was conducted. The read-across substances are representative to evaluate the toxicity of fatty acids, C16-18 (even numbered) and C16-18unsatd. (even numbered), mono-, diesters with neopentyl glycol and di-, triesters with trimethylolpropane since they have a similar structure and thus cover the target substance adequately. Further justification is given within the endpoint summary 6.1 and within the category justification section 13.
First a study, investigating the toxicity to freshwater algae of fatty acids, C16-18 even numbered and C18-unsatd. Triesters with propylidynetrimethanol (CAS 57675-44-2) is used as read across for fatty acids, C16-18 (even numbered) and C16-18unsatd. (even numbered), mono-, diesters with neopentyl glycol and di-, triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS 85186-92-1). The study (Häner, 2006) according to OECD 201 with Desmodesmus subspicatus determined a no-observed-effect concentration for growth rate of ErL0 (72 h) ≥ 100 mg/L (WAF loading rate).
One additional study with Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS 68002-78-8) to aquatic algae is further used for read across (Bouillon, 2012). The study was conducted according to OECD 201. Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was used as test organism. The test solutions were prepared by using the water accommodated fraction (WAF) of the test substance. The algae were exposed to the test substance for 72 h. Based on the growth rate of algae an EL50 > 110 mg/L (nominal) was determined (water solubility of the substance < 0.05 mg/L)
The third read across examined the toxicity of neopentyl glycol dioleate (CAS 42222-50-4) to aquatic algae. The study was performed as a limit test according to OECD 201 (Häner, 2006). The test organism Desmodesmus subspicatus was exposed to the test substance in a static system for 72 h at the nominal loading rate of 100 mg/L. No significant effects on algae were observed and the EL50 was reported to be > 100 mg/L and a NOELR of≥100 mg/L.
Based on the result from structurally related read-across substances (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which are characterized by a similar ecotoxicological profile and comparable structure, it can be concluded that fatty acids, C16-18 (even numbered) and C16-18unsatd. (even numbered), mono-, diesters with neopentyl glycol and di-, triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS 85186-92-1) is not toxic to aquatic algae up to thewater solubility.
