Description of key information

Determination of the partition coefficient of FAT 40863/A TE using the shake-flask method.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Log Kow (Log Pow):
-2.79
at the temperature of:
21.9 °C

Additional information

The determination was carried out using the shake-flask method, designed to be compatible with Method A8 Partition Coefficient of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008 and Method 107 of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, 27 July 1995.

Since the test item is a salt, testing was performed at pH 7 as indicated in test guidance.

The test system consisted of an aqueous and an n-octanol phase in the same vessel. A defined amount of test item was added (pre-dissolved in the appropriate phase). Partition of the test item between both phases was achieved by inversion of the mixture. The temperature was in the range of 20 to 25 °C and kept constant (± 1 °C).

Discussion

The determination of partition coefficient was performed using the shake-flask method, as indicated for salts.

The stock solution was prepared in n-octanol saturated water in place of water saturated n-octanol. This was due to the insolubility of the test item in the organic phase. This issue has been considered to have had a negligible impact on the overall results and has been considered to be more appropriate to obtain a realistic partition coefficient value.

Conclusion

The partition coefficient of the test item has been determined to be 1.67 x 10-3at 21.9 ± 0.5 °C, log10Pow-2.79.
