Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

benzylparaben in Tamiya river water according to the OECD guideline 301A. Initial concentration was 100µg/l and the solution was placed in a flask at 20 °C.After experiment it was found that the benzylparaben (98-18-8) was having half life of 10 hrs which indicate that it is moderately persistence in water.

From Publication and EPI prediction data the test substance found to bemoderately persistence in water.benzylparaben in Tamiya river water according to the OECD guideline 301A. Initial concentration was 100µg/l and the solution was placed in a flask at 20 °C.After experiment it was found that the benzylparaben (98-18-8) was having half life of 10 hrs which indicate that it is moderately persistence in water.

In another study, biodegradation test was conducted using benzylparaben in Tsumeta river water according to the OECD guideline 301A. Initial concentration was 100µg/l and the solution was placed in a flask at 28 °C.After experiment it was found that the benzylparaben (98-18-8) was having half life of 14 hrs which indicate that it is moderately persistence in water.

The screening test inherent to the biodegradability of the substance was calculated using the software BIOWIN v4.10.

The results indicate that Benzyl 4-hydroxybenzoate is not expected to be readily biodegradable.
