The flammability of the test item was evaluated according to the EU Method A.10 and UN Method N.1.
The test item was formed into an unbroken strip or powder train about 250 mm long and a preliminary screening test performed to determine if, on ignition by a gas flame, propagation by burning with flame or smouldering occurs.
In the safety pre-test following the EU method A10, the test item started to melt und burned with a yellow flame. In the preliminary screening test the test item melted into a colourless liquid. No indications of flammability could be observed.
Therefore, the test item should not be considered as highly flammable (for EU regulations) and not classified as a flammable solid (for UN regulations).
Justification for classification or non-classification
According to the CLP Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008: A flammable solid means a solid which is readily combustible, or may cause or contribute to fire through friction. Readily combustible solids are powdered, granular, or pasty substances or mixtures which are dangerous if they can be easily ignited by brief contact with an ignition source, such as a burning match, and if the flame spreads rapidly. The classification criteria for flammable solids are indicated in the CLP Regulation as follows:
Annex I: 2.7.2.1. Powdered, granular or pasty substances or mixtures (except powders of metals or metal alloys – see 2.7.2.2) shall be classified as readily combustible solids when the time of burning of one or more of the test runs, performed in accordance with the test method described in Part III, sub-section 33.2.1, of the UN RTDG, Manual of Tests and Criteria, is less than 45 seconds or the rate of burning is more than 2,2 mm/s. 2.7.2.2. Powders of metals or metal alloys shall be classified as flammable solids when they can be ignited and the reaction spreads over the whole length of the sample in 10 minutes or less. 2.7.2.3. A flammable solid shall be classified in one of the two categories for this class using Method N.1 as described in 33.2.1 of the UN RTDG, Manual of Tests and Criteria in accordance with Table 2.7.1;
During the preliminary test the substance melted into a colourless liquid. No indications of flammability could be ob-served. No burning rate was therefore determined and the substance is not classified as flammable according to the CLP Regulation (EC) No.1272/2008.
