All predicted sources i.e EPI Suite,PBT profiler and Chemspider database indicate that the test substance 2 Phenylpropionaldehyde has a low sorption to soil and sediment and therefore have moderate migration potential to groundwater.

With following Koc values:

EPI SUITE - 33.08 (Log Koc=1.519)

PBT profiler -33 (Log KoC=1.518)

Chemspider -275.87 (log KOC =2.44)

Other weight of evidence study for read across from HSDB database indicate that the soil adsorption coefficient (Koc) value of 1-phenylethanol is found to be 37 L/kg in Fullerton soil (log KOC =1.568) and in Dormont soil type it would be 52 (log Koc=1.716) indicating that it is has a low sorption to soil and sediment and therefore have moderate migration potential to groundwater.

Biodegradation in water: screening tests

A number of studies for the test compound 2 Phenylpropionaldehyde(CAS No. 93-53-8) alongwith its predicted data andread across substance studies were reviewed for the biodegradation end point which are summarized as below:

Estimation Programs Interface Suite (EPI suite) was run to predict the biodegradation potential of the test compound 2 Phenylpropionaldehyde(CAS No. 93-53-8). The screening test inherent to the biodegradability of the substance was calculated using the software BIOWIN v4.10. The results indicate 2 Phenylpropionaldehyde was estimated to be readily biodegradable in water.

 

Biodegradation of alpha-methylbenzyl alcohol was studied (HSDB (U. S. National Library of Medicine), 2016)and it was determined as alpha-methylbenzyl alcohol was completely biodegraded under aerobic conditions within 2-3 weeks. Thus, the test chemical was considered to be readily biodegradable.

In screening tests (HSDB (U. S. National Library of Medicine), 2016), alpha-methylbenzyl alcohol was 50 % degraded as half-life of 7 days was measured under anaerobic conditions. Therefore, after experiment it was observed that alpha-methylbenzyl alcohol (CAS no. 98 -85 -1) was readily biodegradable.

 

In biodegradation test (HSDB (U. S. National Library of Medicine), 2016), experiment was performed using alpha-methylbenzyl alcohol under aerobic condition at an initial concentration of test substance 6000ppm using BOD parameter for 8 -10 days. Therefore, after experiment alpha-methylbenzyl alcohol (CAS no. 98-85-1) was determined to be readily biodegradable in nature as the chemical was degraded (percentage degradation - 78.2%) in aerobic condition within 8-10 days.

 

Biodegradation study of test substance alpha-methylbenzyl alcohol (CAS no. 98-85-1) (HSDB (U. S. National Library of Medicine), 2016)was conducted for a period of 32 days using a mixed microbial culture as a test organism.Initial test substance conc. used in the study was 550 mg/l. The percentage degradation of test substance was found to be 96.32% by BOD. Thus, the substancealpha-methylbenzyl alcohol was considered to be readily biodegradable in water.

 

Biodegradation screening test (J-CHECK) was conducted for 14 days (2 weeks) for evaluating the percentage biodegradability of the test substance. Concentration of inoculum i.e, sludge is 30 mg/l and initial test substance conc. used in the study is 100 mg/l. The percentage degradation of test substance was found to be 33% by BOD. Thus, the substance isopropylbenzene was considered to be readily biodegradable in water.

Bioaccumulation: aquatic/sediment

The estimated BCF values for 2 Phenylpropionaldehyde at pH = 5.5 - 7.4 was found to be 18.03.
