Description of key information
Test results indicate that the study substance did not inhibit photo-luminescence in the bacterium, Photobacterium phosphoreum, at WSF levels that exceed its water solubility limit. Therefore, mono-, and di-(sec-hexadecyl)naphthalene does not impact microbial activity and is not expected to be harmful to aquatic microorganisms including those that may be present in wastewater treatment facilities.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
Data directly assessing the short-term effects or toxicity potential to sewage treatment micro-organisms of mono-, and di-(sec-hexadecyl)naphthalene are not available. However, read-across Micotox microbial inhibition data support the assessment that the study substance would not be expected to be harmful to microorganism present in activated sewage sludge. Hence, it is unlikely that mono-, and di-(sec-hexadecyl)naphthalene would inhibit the microbial respiration rate in activated sewage at high loadings in excess of its water solubility.
Bacterial inhibition to the marine bacterium Photobacterium phosphoreum has been evaluated using the Microtox ™ assay which measures photo-luminescence response. Adverse effects (i.e., inhibition) are measured as a decrease in photo-luminescence. The study substance, mono-, and di-(sec-hexadecyl)naphthalene, was evaluated as WSF solutions using a 15-minute exposure interval (Mobil Environ Health Sci. Lab. 1989b) . The 100% WSF test solutions of the test material did not demonstrate inhibition to photo-luminescence at loadings up to 95000 mg/L (nominal) used to prepare the 100% WSF and their serial dilutions. WSF solutions were expected to exceed the water solubility limits of the study substance.
