Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

the study does not need to be conducted because the substance has a low potential for bioaccumulation based on log Kow <=3

Description of key information

The log Kow of DD-lactide is 0.4, indicating a very low potential to bioaccumulate. In addition, DD-lactide is not surface active. In aqueous environments DD-lactide rapidly hydrolyses into lactic acid. Therefore, the potential of bioaccumulation behaviour of DD-lactide in the environment can be understood in terms of the bioaccumulation behaviour of lactic acid. In this regard, lactic acid with an octanol-water partition coefficient (log Kow) of -0.54, is not expected to significantly bioaccumulate or to cross the cell membrane. In addition, lactic acid occurs naturally in many edible products and also an important ingredient in the food industry. Furthermore, lactic acid is readily biodegradable and highly water soluble. Therefore, the waiving criteria according to Annex IX, column 2, point 9.3.2 of the REACH Regulation, as amended by Regulation (EU) 2021/979, are fulfilled. Performance of a bioaccumulation study is not required.
