Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:

Guideline:
other: REACH guidance on QSAR R.6, May 2008
Deviations:
not applicable
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The computer program ECOSAR (v1.00) by US-EPA is used for this estimation. ECOSAR is a scientifically accepted calculation method for organic chemicals; it estimates the toxicity of chemicals discharged to water and predicts beside the acute (short-term) toxicity also the chronic (long-term or delayed) toxicity of a chemical.

Results and discussion

Effect concentrations
Duration:
96 h
Dose descriptor:
EC50
Effect conc.:
1.051 mg/L
Nominal / measured:
estimated
Conc. based on:
not specified
Basis for effect:
growth rate
Remarks on result:
other: no algal cell growth inhibition up to its limit of solubility in water
Details on results:
Due to its very low water solubility the substance may not be soluble enough to measure this predicted effect. Further, as the logKow is greater than 5 and the EC50 exceeds the water solubility by factor 10 or more, no effects at saturation are predicted.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
not applicable
Conclusions:
EC50 for green algae (96h) = 1.051 mg/L, but the substance may not be soluble enough to measure this predicted effect.
Executive summary:

The short-term toxicity value (acute) of the substance of interest for green algae was determined by calculation. This calculation was performed by the computer program form US-EPA (EPIWIN software ECOSAR v1.00); result: EC50(96 h) for green algae = 1.051 mg/L.

Nevertheless, the water solubility (IUCLID section 4.8) and the logKow (IUCLID section 4.7) of a chemical should be compared with the predicted toxicity value derived for a chemical. If the logKow (5.1) is greater than 5 and the LC50 exceeds the measured or predicted maximum water solubility (<0.05 mg/L) by factor 10 or even more then an effect is not expected to occur in a saturated solution.
