Description of key information

In total, 75 reliable EC10 or NOEC values for chronic zinc toxicity to terrestrial plants were retrieved. These data cover various endpoints (shoot and root yield, root elongation, grain yield, biomass yield, first bloom) for 12 different plant species (Allium cepa, Avena sativa, Brassica rapa, Cucumis sativus, Hordeum vulgare, Populus trichocarpa, Lycopersicon esculentum, Trifolium pratense, Trigonella foenum graceum, Triticum aestivum, Vicia sativa and Zea mays) from 7 different families (Amaryllidaceae, Brassicaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Fabaceae, Poaceae, Salicaceae andSolanaceae). NOEC and EC10 values vary between 40 mg Zn/kg dw for Trifolium pratense (red clover) shoot and root yield and Vicia sativa (vetch) root yield (Van der Hoeven and Henzen, 1994) and 5925 mg Zn/kg dw for Triticum aestivum (wheat) shoot yield (Warne et al., 2008). All NOEC and EC10 values are expressed based on total elemental Zn concentrations in soil. All reliable NOEC and EC10 values were taken forward to the derivation of the PNEC according to the statistical extrapolation approach.
