Description of key information

Lead metal massive and powder are not classified according to the test result for flammability (EU A.10 method). Note this test was performed on lead powder and is also used as worst case for massive lead metal classification.

Waivers are in place for pyrophoric properties and flammability in contact with water.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Flammable solids: Lead metal massive and powder not classified according to the test result for flammability (EU A.10 method). Note this test was performed on lead powder and is also used as worst case for massive lead metal classification.

Pyrophoric properties: Lead metal is also not classified for pyrophoric properties. During testing for flammability (EU Method A.10), no ignition on contact with air was observed. The test substance did not ignite on contact with air and is thus not deemed a pyrophoric solid accoring to GHS criteria. Furthermore, long-term industrial handling of the substance has not yielded any pyrophoric behaviour.

Flammability in contact with water: Testing of flammability in contact with water is not considered to be required, because lead metal does not contain groups that might lead to a reaction with water or damp air that could lead to the development of dangerous amounts of gas or gases which may be highly flammable. Furthermore, long-term industrial handing experience with the substance shows that it does not react with water, and experimental testing for water solubility and per the transformation/dissolution protocol have not yielded formation of any gas.
