Description of key information

The test substance was (or its hydrolysis products were) considered to be ready biodegradable based on the results of a microbial degradation study according to OECD Guideline 301.

Additional information

A ready biodegradability study (microbial degradation) with the test substance was performed for 28 days according to OECD Guideline 301 C (Modified MITI test). The following measurements and analyses were made: Measurement of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) with closed-system oxygen consumption measuring apparatus; Analysis of dissolved organic carbon by total organic carbon analysis (TOC); Analysis of dissolved organic carbon by total organic carbon analysis (TOC); Analysis of test substance with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results of the three test vessels containing each 100 mg/L of test substance and 300 mg/L of activated sludge were compared to the vessels containing only test substance and water (for a theoretical value). The test substance was quickly hydrolyzed to form methacrylic acid and 2-diethylaminoethanol. The following results were obtained:

Degradability based on measurement of BOD (oxygen consumption): 89 %, 35 %, 86 %, average of 70 %; of TOC: 93 %, 40 %, 94 %; by HPLC: 100%, 100%, 100%. The BOD and the TOC results relate to the 2 hydrolyses products of the test substance.
