Description of key information

The acute toxicity towards Desmodesmus subspicatus was investigated according to OECD TG 201 under GLP. Algae were exposed to nominal concentrations of 0.43, 1.4, 4.3, 14 and 43 mg/l and observed for 72 hours. Because test concentrations decreased during the test to 10 to 24% of the nominal concentrations, the 72h-EC10 and 72h-ErC50 were based on the geometric mean concentrations and were 6 and 10 mg/l respectively. This is a worst case estimate because at these lower concentrations the substance was stable when stored under light and dark conditions or when using open vessels. The decreases in concentrations are likely to occur via adsorption to algae.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
10 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
6 mg/L
