The aquatic hazard assessment of l-Glutamic acid, N-coco acyl derivs., disodium salts (CAS No. 68187-30-4) was performed using test results with the substance itself and available data for the source substance l-Glutamic acid, N-coco acyl derivs., monosodium salts (CAS No. 68187-32-6), which was used in a read across approach in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5.

The read across to the source substance is considered valid as the target substance and the source substance are structurally very similar (having identical functional groups), which assumes very similar physico-chemical properties resulting in identical environmental behavior and ecotoxicity. l-Glutamic acid, N-coco acyl derivs., monosodium salts (CAS No. 68187-32-6) is structurally identical and solely differs in the degree of deprotonation being a monosodium (source substance) instead of a disodium (target substance) salt.

 

Since no studies investigating the short-term toxicity of l-Glutamic acid, N-coco acyl derivs., disodium salts (CAS No. 68187-30-4) to freshwater fish, aquatic invertebrates and algae are available, data for the source substance l-Glutamic acid, N-coco acyl derivs., monosodium salts (CAS No. 68187-32-6) were used. The key studies showed a 96h-LC50 of 62.4 mg/L for fish, a 48h-EC50 of 49 mg/L for aquatic invertebrates and a 72h-EC50 of 32.56 mg/L for algae. Giving these results l-Glutamic acid, N-coco acyl derivs., disodium salts is considered to be harmful to aquatic organisms. Algae are identified as most sensitive organisms.

Regarding chronic data, a 72h-EC10 value for freshwater algae is available and determined to be 11.25 mg/L. A long-term toxicity test with daphnia magna showed no inhibition of reproduction up to 5.5 mg/L. No long-term toxicity test with fish are available. The hazard assessment of l-Glutamic acid, N-coco acyl derivs., disodium salts however reveals that aquatic invertebrates are more sensitive than fish. Therefore, no further test with fish is considered to be necessary. Giving these results l-Glutamic acid, N-coco acyl derivs., disodium salts is considered to be not harmful to aquatic organisms at chronic exposure.

One study investigating the toxicity of l-Glutamic acid, N-coco acyl derivs., disodium salts (CAS No. 68187-30-4) to aquatic microorganisms is available. A 3h-EC10 is determined to be > 1000 mg/L. As the substance is readily biodegradable no toxicity was expected for microorganisms. The test result confirmed this assumption. Thus, inhibition of the biodegradation activity of activated sludge in STPs is not anticipated.
