Description of key information

The chemical safety assessment according to Annex I of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 does not indicate the need to investigate further the toxicity to terrestrial arthropods.

In accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex IX, column 2, 9.4 further studies on the effects on terrestrial organisms do not have to be conducted since the chemical safety assessment indicates that there is no need. No experimental data on toxicity to terrestrial arthropods are available for Fatty acids, C8-C10, C12-18-alkyl esters (CAS 95912-86-0). The test substance is characterised by a high log Koc indicating a considerable potential for adsorption to soil particles. Therefore, tests with soil-dwelling organisms that feed on soil particles are most relevant for the evaluation of soil toxicity of Fatty acids, C8-C10, C12-18-alkyl esters.

A chronic test investigating the toxicity to earthworms according to OECD 222 with the test substance is available resulting in a NOEC (56 d) of 500 mg/kg dw for Eisenia fetida indicating low toxicity to terrestrial organisms. Moreover, no acute and chronic effects were observed in the available aquatic studies. Exposure of the soil compartment is generally considered to be low. Even if exposed to the soil the LCAE category members are readily biodegradable indicating that they will not be persistent in the environment. Indirect exposure via irrigation or atmospheric transport is considered to be negligible based on the physico-chemical properties of the LCAE category members (water solubility:< 1 mg/L or even < 0.05 mg/L;vapour pressure: <0.0001 Pa (minimum) - 0.11 Pa (maximum)).

Thus, the available data investigating the toxicity to terrestrial macroorganisms are sufficient to assess the hazard of Fatty acids, C8-C10, C12-18-alkyl esters to terrestrial organisms.
