Description of key information

The test substance has no oxidizing properties.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Oxidising properties:
no

Additional information

In a GLP compliant study, performed according to EU method A.17, the oxidising properties of the test substance were determined (Ciba-Geigy 1994). A hot flame from a gas burner was used as an ignition source. The 5% test sustance:95% cellulose mixture and the 10:90 mixture showed a maximum burning rate of 1.7 and 1.6 mm/s, respectively. In the 20:80 mixture burning with flame or smouldering fire was observed and none of the 6 tests propagated to the second reference mark. Extinction after 0 - 8 cm was observed. The maximum burning rate of the reference mixture barium nitrate/cellulose (60:40) was 3.1 mm/s. Therefore it could be concluded that the test substance has no oxidizing properties.

Justification for classification or non-classification

As the test substance has no oxidising properties, classification is not needed according to the Directive 67/584/EEC and according to the EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
