Photodegradation in air

In the atmosphere a half-life of 2.9 days for adipic acid is estimated due to indirect photolysis with hydroxyl radicals, considering an OH-concentration of 500,000 radicals/cm³ as a 24-h average.

Hydrolysis

Hydrolysis of adipic acid is not expected, as the substance does not contain hydrolysable functional groups.

Photodegradation in water

A liquid phase kinetic study on the ozonolysis and on the UV-induced ozonolysis of selected dicarboxylic acids, including adipic acid was performed, resulting in an ozone-dependent life time of about 13,000 years.
