Description of key information

Skin irritation / corrosion:
Based on the test results (study performed according to OECD guideline 404), zirconium dioxide was determined not to be irritating to New Zealand White rabbit.
Eye irritation:
Based on the test results on New Zealand White rabbit, obtained with yttrium stabilised zirconium dioxide, zirconium dioxide should not be classified for eye irritation according to the rules laid down in DSD and CLP.

Additional information

Skin irritation / corrosion:

One reliable study was identified (Klimisch 2) and selected as key study (study of Magnesium Elektron Ltd, 1986). This GLP study was performed according to the OECD 404 guideline with minor deviations. The substance was determined not to be irritating to New Zealand White rabbit skin after 4 hours of exposure.

Eye irritation:

A reliable study with the read across substance yttrium zirconium oxide was performed (Tosoh, 2000) in New Zealand White rabbit according to OECD guideline 405 with some minor deviations. The test substance was determined to be slightly irritating based on the AFNOR criteria. Observed effects were fully reversible within 72 hours. It does however not need to be classified for eye irritation according to the rules of the DSD and CLP. These results can be used for zirconium dioxide too.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Skin irritation / corrosion:

Based on to the available data and according to the criteria of the CLP Regulation, this substance should not be classified for skin corrosion / irritation.

Serious eye damage / irritation:

Based on the available read across data and according to the criteria of the CLP Regulation, this substance should not be classified for serious eye damage / irritation.
