ptBP was found to be moderately toxic to aquatic invertebrates (Daphnia magna), with a 48-h EC50 in the range of 3.9 to 6.7 mg/L.

Additional information

The toxicity of ptBP to invertebrates was assessed in a static test with Daphnia magna following the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals No. 202, and was conducted according to the GLP principles (NIVA, 2001). Daphnids were exposed to ptBP at six concentrations ranging from 0.56 to 10 mg/L. No lethality or immobilisation of Daphnia magna was observed at 3.2 mg/L (48h-NOEC), while all animals were immobilised at 10 mg/L after 48 hours exposure. The 48 h-EC50 value was determined to be 4.8 mg/L, based on nominal concentrations.

In a similar supporting study with static test conditions using Daphnia magna, which was performed according to the German test standard DIN 38412, a 48 h-EC50 of 3.9 mg/L was determined based on nominal concentrations (Kühn et al., 1989).

The toxicity of ptBP to Daphnia magna over a period of 48 hours was also assessed in a semi-static test, conducted in accordance with the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals No. 202 (EA of JAPAN, 1996). In this study DMSO was used as solubilizer, and the 48h-EC50 was determined to be 6.7 mg/L based on nominal concentrations. 

The acute toxicity of ptBP was also evaluated with the marine species Crangon septemspinosa (MCLeese et al., 1979). No standard guideline was followed. The 96h-LC50 was determined to be 1.9 mg/L, and was based on measured concentrations.
