ptBP was found to be moderately toxic to aquatic organisms (fish), aquatic invertebrates (Daphnia magna and Crangon septemspinosa), and aquatic algae (Selenastrum capricornutum).

Also, in a long-term toxicity study in fathead minnows, the most sensitive endpoints were growth, secondary sex characteristics, and onset of hatching. These endpoints showed effects that appeared to be related to small delays in development. Clearly defined estrogenic effects were only apparent in the highest concentration treatment group (300 µg/L) as evidenced by feminization of gonadal ducts of male fish and elevated levels of vitellogenin in females.
