Subjects:
A 58-year-old textile worker presented with recurrent bilateral otitis externa.
During the course of his work, he wore yellow foam earplugs (EAR plugs; Cabot Safety Ltd.).
Patch tests to the ICDRG standard series were negative but a positive (++) reaction to his earplug was noted at 48 and 96 h.
3 months later, he was patch tested to the components of the earplugs. These included the blowing agent, azodicarbonamide.

Results and discussion

Results of examinations:
Patch tests to azodicarbonamide 1% pet. and 5% pet. were repeated in 10 controls with negative results.
The patient's otitis externa cleared on discarding his earplugs.
