Description of key information

VDF is not expected to hydrolyse under normal environmental conditions.

No data on the hydrolysis is available for VDF. However, data on hydrolysis from the structurally similar vinylidene chloride (VDCl) is available from literature. The experimentally derived hydrolysis half-life of VDCl was 1.2E08 years at 25 ºC and pH 7 (Jeffers et al., 1989). As a C-F bond is stronger than a C-Cl bond (e.g. McGivern et al., 2000), it can be expected that the hydrolysis half-life of VDF is even higher than the reported value for VDCl, resulting in a lower hydrolysis rate constant. It is not possible to calculate a hydrolysis rate constant for VDF from the available data. However, the rate constant for VDCl calculated is very small at environmental temperature and pH conditions and homogeneous hydrolysis certainly can be regarded as negligible. The extrapolated half-live is very high and as a result, for practical purposes, the validity of the extrapolation process is beyond question, and extrapolation errors are irrelevant. Therefore, it should be concluded that VDF does not significantly hydrolyse and as a reasonable worst-case assumption the hydrolyis half-life of VDCl can be adopted (see Annex 1 for the Reporting Format).
