Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Toxicity to algae was moderate (72 hr EC50, S. subspicatus: biomass: 11.5 mg/L, growth rate: 16.6 mg/L). (Huels, 1991)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
16.6 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
5.3 mg/L

Additional information

Valid data on the toxicity of 2-ethylhexanol to algae are available, indicating moderate toxicity (Huels, 1991):

72 h EC50

Scenedesmus subspicatus.

growth rate:

The effect of 2 -ethylhexanol on algal growth was tested in a GLP guideline study (Huels, 1991; key study; according to EEC 88/302 C.3) using Scenedesmus subspicatus. Validity criteria of the guideline were met, however nominal test item concentrations were not analytically verified (reliability category 2). The EC50 (72 h) was 11.5 mg/L based on biomass, and 16.6 mg/L based on the growth rate. The EC10 based on growth rate (72 h) was determined as 5.3 mg/L, the NOAEC was 2.0 mg/L.

A not assignable study (study report not available; Huels, 1988; RL4) supports these results: Taking the same species (Scenedesmus subspicatus), EC50 and EC10 (72 h, growth rate) were determined as 13.3 mg/L and 1.3 mg/L and are thus of similar size compared to the results of the key study.

The EC50 (72 h; growth rate) of 16.6 mg/L determined in the key study on Scenedesmus subspicatus (new name: Desmodesmus subspicatus) is used for chemical safety assessment.
