Description of key information

In accordance with column 2 of Annex IX, no experimental study needs to be conducted if the substance has a low potential for adsorption. The log Kow of 2.9 for 2 -Ethylhexanol (Perstorp, 2010) indicates a low potential for adsorption. In addition the substance is readily biodegradable (NITE, 2002).
Using an accepted calculation program (US EPA EPI SuiteTM 4.11 module KOCWIN v. 2.00) the estimated Koc was 35.28 L/kg according to the structure based MCI-method and 131.1 L/kg according to the method based on log Kow (user entry of experimentally determined value of 2.9 at 25°C). Both values demonstrate a low adsorption potential for the submission substance.
Due to the chemical safety assessment process, input of a single, key Koc value is required:
- In order tto derive PNECs for sediment and soil by equilibrium partitioning,
- for use by CHESAR to model exposures of sediment and soil to give consistent RCR values for these compartments.
Therefore, the Koc value of 131.1 L/kg (worst-case: maximises exposures of sediment and soil; derived by QSAR modelling from the experimentally determined log Kow) has been taken as a key value for chemical safety assessment.
