Additional information

Two experimental results were available in order to assess the toxicity of Dibenzoyl peroxide to aquatic invertebrates. However, these results were considered as unreliable due to the insufficient documentation or unsuitable test systems. As a consequence, a new test was performed according to EEC method C.1 (1984) and OECD Test Guideline 202 (1984) and GLP criteria. These three studies are summarised below:

- K3 Supporting Study (methodological deficiencies): the acute toxicity to Daphnia magna (water flea) was tested under static conditions for 48 hours in accordance with OECD and EEC guidelines for testing of chemicals, and ECETOC, Monograph 26 (1996). The test was performed in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP). The WAF (Water Accommodated Fraction) prepared from a 1.00025 g/L solution was tested. The following dilutions were tested: 1:16 - 1:8 - 1:4 - 1:2 and the WAF undiluted. Chemical analyses were performed as NPOC (non-purgeable organic carbon). Based on the NPOC concentration determined at the beginning of the test the concentrations were calculated as indicative values. These indicative values were used to calculate the EC50(48h) resulting in 2.91 mg/I, with 95% confidence limits of 2.72 and 3.11 mg/I.

 

- K4 Supporting Study (documentation insufficient for assessment): the EC50-48h of Dibenzoyl peroxide was estimated at 0.07 mg/l (NIER, 2001).

Therefore, Dibenzoyl peroxide can be considered as very toxic to aquatic invertebrates.
