Silver metal and silver-containing compounds undergo dissolution in environmental media (to a greater or lesser extent) and release silver ions. Analytical methods do not usually differentiate between silver ions and other silver containing compounds, and so the environmental fate section will therefore discuss the fate of silver in general. As silver is an element it, cannot undergo degradation but may be transformed between different phases, chemical species and oxidation states.
