Screening tests:

The aerobic biodegradation of DMSO in water has been investigated in studies compliant with OECD guideline or national standard methods, which revealed that DMSO cannot be considered as readily biodegradable in water.

Simulation tests:

Simulation test seems to demonstrate that DMSO would be biodegradable but DMSO concentration in the effluent can conclude to the contrary due to possible toxicity effects.

Based on the above mentioned results, DMSO can be considered as inherently biodegradable only.

The likely aerobic biodegradation products of the DMSO was identified and assessed for its P and B properties, by using the EAWAG BBD Pathway Prediction System and the EPA EPISUITE tools (KOWWIN, BCFBAF and BIOWIN). The parent substance and the degradation product do not fulfill PBT nor vPvB screening criteria.
