Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

4,4-sulphonyldiphenol is considered as not ready biodegradable according to OECD 301 C .

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In a MITI test according to OECD 301C, the biodegradation of 4,4 -sulphonyldiphenol was investigated. Under these test conditions no biodegradation was observed.

Although 4,4'-sulphonydiphenol is assessed as not readily biodegradable, there is evidence that the substance may be degraded by microbial populations after acclimatisation. In fact, in a test conducted according to OECD Guideline 301 B under enhanced conditions, after an adaptation phase of approx 27 days, the biodegradation of 4,4'-sulphonyldiphenol reached 32 % at test termination (day 59). The role of adaptation in the biodegradation process is confirmed by studies dimostrating high removal of 4,4'-sulphonydiphenol from municipal wastewater treatment plants (Qian Sun et al., Environmental Pollution 225: 542 -549, 2017; M. Cesen et al., Science of the Total Environment, 616 -617: 744 -752, 2018; BASF SE, 2006).
