Description of key information

The water solubility of zirconium sulfate was determined in a GLP study following the test design of the flask method as specified in test guideline EC A.6 and OECD Guideline 105 (Fox, 2013). Expressed as anhydrous zirconium sulfate, the water solubility was determined to be 669 g/L at 20°C and a pH range of 1.1 to 1.2.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
669 g/L

20 °C

Additional information

Based on the results of the study performed by Fox (2013), the substance is concluded to be very soluble in water at a low pH. The buffer capacity of buffer solutions tested at pH 4, 7 and 9 was overruled, resulting in pH values in the range of 0.2 to 0.4 and initial pH did not influence water solubility. However, it is expected - as demonstrated for other water soluble zirconium compounds such as zirconium acetate and zirconium dichloride oxide - that progressive precipitation will occur with increasing pH in realistic buffered systems.
