Additional information

To determine the toxicity for microorganisms, a respiration inhibition test with activated sludge of a predominantly domestic sewage treatment plant was conducted according to GLP and OECD guidelines 209 (De Groot and van Dijk, 2001). In this test activated sludge was exposed for 3 hours to nominal peracetic acid concentrations of 0, 0.3, 1.0, 3.0, 10, 30 and 100 mg/L (dilutions of distilled peracetic acid 39.5 %). The test substance concentration was measured 3, 15, 60 and 180 minutes after the start of the test. The EC50 after 3 hours was 5.1 mg peracetic acid/L (based on nominal concentrations). A similar activated sludge respiration inhibition test was reported by Hanstveit et al. (1999), but the concentration of peracetic acid was not measured during the test. The EC50 after 3 hours was 38.6 mg peracetic acid/L (based on nominal concentrations).
