Reference values of 5%PAA solutions range from 74 to 83°C, those of 15% PAA solutions were between 68 and 81°C.

A comparison of safety data sheets from different producers showed considerable scatter in measured flashpoints: The closed-cup flash points of 5%PAA solutions ranged from 74 to 83°C, those of 15% PAA solutions were between 68 and 81°C and those of 35% PAA solutions were between 46 and 62 °C. This may be due to factors such as PAA reacting with the sample container used in the test, thermal instability of the tested solution, loss of volatile material during analysis due to decomposition and excessive gassing, releasing oxygen and water which tends to extinguish any flame.

Most of the PAA equilibrium solutions ranging from 5% to 15% PAA exhibited closed-cup flash points but no measurable open-cup flash points. However, a sustained flame is possible in a closed system. Decomposition of PAA produces oxygen. A closed system prevents the release of oxygen, which on the presence of the organic (acetic acid) can sustain a flame. Thus, all the gases produced remain in the system and they can burn. Equilibrium grades of concentrations > 30% PAA or higher exhibit both open and closed-cup flash points and vapours can be flammable.
