Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria
Administrative data

Description of key information
No adverse effects to algae were observed in a study according to OECD 201.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
Two experimental studies are available.
In a GLP guideline study according to OECD 201 (2019) the toxicity of the test item to Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was tested. Since the test item is an uvcb substance and poorly soluble, saturated solutions were prepared withwater accommodated fractions (WAF)under consideration of Guidance document on aquatic toxicity testing of difficult items and mixtures, OECD series on testing and assessment number 23, 2019.: An appropriate amount of the test itemwas pipetted onto the surface of an appropriate amount of the dilution waterand aslow stirring procedure was applied for 120 ± 1 hour at room temperature. After a separation phase of 30 minutes at room temperature, the aqueous phase or WAF was removed by siphoning. The study was conducted as a semi-static limit test with a nominal loading rate of 100 mg/L.
The limit loading rate and the control were analytically verified by LC-MS/MS at the start and the end of the exposure.Only the monoalkylated isomers could be quantified. The measured concentrationsof the water accommodated fraction (WAF) of the test itemin the fresh media were in the range of < LOQ (1 µg test item/L) to 8.6 µg /L. At the end of exposure after 72 hours, all measured concentrations were < LOQ.It was concluded that these results could not be used to base test concentration upon. Thus, results of the present study were based on the loading rates initially prepared.
No adverse effects on algae, growth and yield were observed.
ErLR10 72h > 100mg/L nominal loading rate (WAF)
ErLR50 72h > 100mg/L nominal loading rate (WAF)
Additionally, these results are supported by a GLP study carried out with test material containing two main constituents of EC 253 -249 -4 in similar concentrations.
This test followed the test procedures of the OECD guideline 201and the toxic effects of the WAF of this mixture on Selenastrum carpicornutum were investigated. Based on growth rate an EC50 (72 h, nominal) of 600 mg/l and 870 mg/l (96h, nominal) and NOEC 96h of 33 mg/L was measured [TR Wilbury1997].
Based on the available data on toxicity to algae it can be concluded that UVCB substance EC 253 -249 -4 is not toxic to algae up to the solubility limit.
