The fish, SPM and sediment samples analysed for the test items were from the stock of the German Environmental Specimen Bank (ESB).
Fish samples were collected in different rivers in Europe and the Lake Belau in Germany. The fish samples were bream and sole muscle tissues (filets).
Bream (Abramis brama) is quite common in central, south and north European countries. It is a non-migrating bottom feeder fish and is widely used as monitoring organism. In addition, sole samples (Solea solea) from the Western Scheldt area in The Netherlands were analyzed as well. Muscle tissues (filets) were analyzed in the monitoring study as filet is one of the standard tissues used for the environmental monitoring of chemicals in fish (especially for lipophilic compounds). To compare tissues with different fat contents a normalization to the fat content can be performed.

The method was applied to the analysis of TBBPA, TBBPA-MME and TBBPA-DME in 43 fish samples, 14 SPM and 2 sediment samples.
TBBPA could be quantified in 13 of 36 bream samples (range ~ 0.5 - 1.2 μg/kg ww) and 7 of 7 sole muscle samples (range ~ 0.5 – 0.7 μg/kg ww). Further, it could be quantified in 11 of the 14 SPM samples (range ~ 0.5 – 9.4 μg/kg dw) and in both of the sediment core samples (2.3 – 2.6 μg/kg dw).
TBBPA-MME could be quantified in 12 of 36 bream and 4 of 7 sole muscle samples (range ~ 0.8 – 1.8 μg/kg ww). Further, it could be quantified in 10 of the 14 SPM samples (range ~ 2.3 – 4.5 μg/kg dw) and in both of sediment core samples (5.2 – 5.5 μg/kg dw).
Dimethyl-TBBPA was only rarely detectable and could be quantified above the LOQ in no sample.
Each fish sample was a composite of musculature from about 15 fish. After sampling, the samples were ground at low temperatures using a liquid nitrogen cooled mill until about 90% of the material developed grain sizes below 200 μm (D90 = 200 μm). The samples available were homogenates from each year. They were stored over liquid nitrogen until analysis.
Samples of Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) were collected using stainless steel traps exposed in the rivers Western Scheldt (The Netherlands), Tees and Mersey (Great Britain), Rhone (France) and Götaälv (Sweden). The traps were sampled every three month resulting in 4 subsamples per year. These were combined to one composite sample per year. TheGötaälv and Mersey SPM samples were sampled only once per year. After sampling, the SPM samples were freeze dried, sieved (2 mm) and stored over liquid nitrogen until analysis.
