Additional information

Several studies on the biodegradability in water are available on CAS 16090-02-1. The substance was neither readily nor inherently biodegradable.

The ready biodegradability potential of the substance was determined in the DOC Die-Away Test (key study), according to the OECD 301A: at the end of exposure after 28 days the degree of biodegradation was 10-20 % expressed as removal of DOC, demonstrating that the substance is not ready biodegradable (BASF SE, 2015). The two Zahn Wellens studies reported a removal of the test substance of 98.8 % (Ciba-Geigy Ltd., 1992) and 92 % (Ciba-Geigy Ltd., 1991) at 28 days, nevertheless the 89.6 % and the 83.4 % respectively of the elimination occurred in the first 3 hours, indicating a strong adsorption potential of the test substance.

The further modified MITI (II) -test (Ciba-Geigy Ltd., 1991) available confirms that the test substance is not inherently biodegradable.

Furthermore there was marginal oxygen consumption in a BOD5-test that confirms the non-biodegradability (Various, 2014).

Instead, a major amount (over 80 %) of the DOC was likely to be adsorbed to the activated sludge. The assumption of non-biodegradability of the test substance is also substantiated by a dissertation, in which the environmental fate and behaviour of the test substance was investigated.
