Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

EC50 (0-72 h) for Selenastrum capricornutum, based on growth inhibition, was >111 mg/L.

NOEC (0-72 h) for Selenastrum capricornutum was >111 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A Selenastrum capricornutum growth inhibition test was performed according to EC guideline C.3 and in accordance with GLP (ARC Seibersdorf research GmbH on behalf of H.C. Starck GmbH, 2005). As the test substance was practically insoluble in culture media, an aqueous extract from a "loading rate" of nominal 111 mg Siilcon Nitride per L nutrient medium and four dilutions of this extract were tested against one negative control (nutrient medium only). The aqueous extract was prepared by stirring of the test substance in medium for about 24 hours and subsequent filtration. There were three replicates for each test and control culture. The cell count of the algae was about 10^4 cells/mL at the start of the exposure in each vessel. Cell density of the algae was determined 24, 48 and 72 hours after the onset of incubation. Possible test substance effects were determined by comparison of the areas under the growth curves and by comparison of the growth rates.

NOEC (0 -72h) >111 mg/L (based on area under growth curves and average growth rates)

EC50 (0 -72h)>111 mg/L (based on area under growth curves and average growth rates)
