Description of key information

Not explosive on the basis of an assessment of the structure.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

Determination of this endpoint was considered to be scientifically unjustified as silicon nitride contains no functional groups associated with explosivity. Groups directly concerned with explosive properties include: nitrate ester, aromatic nitro, aliphatic nitro, nitramine, azide, nitroso, perchlorate and acetylides according to REACH guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment point R.7.1.11.3.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Silicon Nitride was determined not to posess explosive properties following an assessment of the chemical structure. On this basis it is considered that silicon nitride does not meet the criteria for classification as explosive under either the Classification, Labelling and Packaging regulation, or the Dangerous Substances Directive.
