The absence of acute toxic effects on and above the level of water solubility (i.e. 0.86 mg/L, Boelhouwers 2004) has been confirmed by a valid and conclusive guideline study under GLP on Zebra fish (Danio rerio) according to OECD TGD 203. In this study (de Groot 2006) a saturation concentration in the ISO 6341 medium, prepared according to OECD guidance document 23, was used.
Significantly higher exposure was realized in the NITE (2002) approach, where Hydrogenated Castor Oil (CAS 61788-85-0) was employed as vehicle. Following this approach the maximum possible enhancement of solubility in the test medium was achieved. The test organisms were exposed to DCDPS and the hundredfold amount of the dispersant. The derived LC50was extrapolated to be > 50 mg/L based on the observed mortality. Only lower concentrations were tested because of the anticipated contribution of the vehicle to the toxicity. In conclusion this study gives evidence for the absence of acute toxicity in an exposure of more than 50 times above the water solubility.
