Details on results:
A pH-adjusted sample (pH: 8.4 - 8.6) with a concentration of the test substance of 1000 mg/L was tested in addition. The mortality was reduced in this sample. Thus, the observed effects may be caused by changes in pH. The LC50 was determined by calculating the geometric mean of the LC0 and the LC100.

Conclusions:
An acute test with Leuciscus idus according to a national guideline (DIN 38412, part 15) is available, resulting in a LC50 value of 146.63 mg/L.
NOEC was 100 mg/L, LC100 = 215 mg/L.
Executive summary:

The acute toxicity of dimethylaminoethanol towards fish was investigated according to German Industrial Standard DIN 38412 (part 15). In this static freshwater test, Leuciscus idus served as test organism. 10 fish were exposed to nominal test substance concentrations of 0 (control), 100, 215, 464, 1000 and 1000 (pH adjusted) mg/L, respectively. For a substance concentration of 100 mg/L, all fish survived the complete exposure period of 96 hours. For a substance concentration of 215 mg/L, all fish died after 48 hours. The LC50 was determined by calculating the geometric mean of the LC0 and the LC100 resulting in a LC50 value of 146.63 mg/L. The NOEC (96 h) value was 100 mg/L while the LC100 (96 h) value amounts to 215 mg/L.

Additional information

Two experimental studies are available which investigate the acute toxicity of dimethylaminoethanol towards fish.

Referring to the key study (BASF AG, 1990), the acute toxicity of dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) was investigated according to German Industrial Standard DIN 38412 (part 15).

With regard to the supporting study, an acute fish toxicity screening study was performed for the substance dimethylaminoethanol - DMAE (BASF AG, 1977). Leuciscus idus served as test organism and was exposed to the test substance for 48 hours. Two preliminary tests (3 animals per concentration) and one main test (10 animals per concentration), both under static conditions, were conducted. Based on the findings in the preliminary tests (concentration range tested: 10 - 10000 mg/L), a LC50 (48 h) value of 1500 -2500 mg/L was determined.
