Description of key information
Prediction by US-EPA tool EPIWIN (AOPWINv1.92) -overall rate constant was determined to be 83.3745 E-12 cm³/molecules*sec and the half-life in air of the substance for a 24 h day will be 4.618 hours.
Additional information
Regarding stability in the environment of 2 -dimethylaminoethanol no experimental data are available. Phototransformation in water and soil is no requirement under REACH regulation. Concerning phototransformation in air a scientifically accepted calculation method (EPIWIN software AOPWINv1.92) was used to estimate the tropospheric half-life as well as the overall OH rate constant of the substance (Chemservice S.A., 2010, revised 2019). The half-life in air will be 0.192 days = 4.618 hours (24 h day) and 0.128 = 1.539 hours (12 h day), thus indicating a rapid degradation when the test substance has potentially entered the atmosphere. The overall OH rate constant gives a value of 83.3745 x E-12 cm³/molecules-sec. Neither ozone nor nitrate reactions are expected for the chemical. It is not expected that 2 -dimethylaminoethanol will accumulate in the air or be transported over long distances. Hence, the environmental compartment air will not be of important concern for the test substance.
2 -dimethylaminoethanol lacks functional groups which will hydrolyze under environmental conditions. In addition, the substance is found to be readily biodegradable and therefore, according to REACH regulation, Annex VIII, section 9.2.2.1, column 2, the endpoint hydrolysis can be waived.
