Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

One study according to OECD 301B indicates that the 10 % level (beginning of biodegradation) was reached after an adaption phase of 2 days. In the 10-d-window a biodegradation of > 73% was reached. The biodegradation came to a maximum of 89% after 28 days. The test item must be regarded to be readily biodegradable in the 10-d-window.
Under the conditions of a manometric respiratory test (OECD 301F) Methylparaben was found to be readily biodegradable. The BOD attained 92% of ThOD after 28 days.
The test substance methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate is inherently biodegradable according to OECD guideline 302B.
Methylparaben attained 40% of the theoretical gas production in the anaerobic screening test according to the method as described by ISO 11734.

Additional information

Two studies indicate ready biodegradability. The most reliable and best documented source proves that Methyl 4 -hydroxybezoate

is readily biodegradable and does meet the 10 day window. The latter result was used for the key parameter.
