Description of key information

The substance has no oxidizing properties.
The test item Methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate did not show a severe reaction in the preliminary study, therefore the definitive study was performed to exclude any doubts.
In the first part of the definitive study, the fastest burning rates of the test item / cellulose mixtures (50 - 70 %) were faster than the reference item mixtures. Therefore the test item mixtures were tested with silica gel and the 60 % test item / cellulose mixture under inert conditions to avoid wrong positive results. No independent burning of the test item / silica gel mixtures (50 - 70 %) could be observed. The test item / cellulose mixture with the fastest burning rate (60 %) did not burn under inert conditions. The test item Methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate was classified as not oxidizing.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Oxidising properties:
no

Additional information

The oxidizing properties of Methyl 4 -hydroxybenzoate were determined in a well documented guideline study according EU method A.17 in compliance with GLP.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The fastest burning rate of the reference item (60 %) in aerobic atmosphere was determined to be 1.65 mm/s. The fastest burning rate of the test item (60 %) in aerobic atmosphere was determined to be 3.64 mm/s. These two mixtures were tested in anaerobic atmosphere with the result, that the test itern Methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate has no oxidizing properties.

Based on the test result and taking into account the provisions laid down in Council Directive 67/548/EEC and CLP (GHS), methyl 4 -hydroxybenzoate does not have to be classified with respect to oxidising properties.
