Additional information

Skin irritation/corrosion

In a primary dermal irritation study, Vienna White rabbits were dermally exposed to 2,5 -dimethylhexane-2,5 -diol. Animals then were observed up to 72 hours. Irritation was scored by the method similar to equivalent to OECD guideline. Almost no effects were noted after treatment. Thus, the substance was classified to be not irritating to the skin. [BASF, 1989]

Eye iriitation/corrosion

In an eye irritation study, undiluted 2,5 -dimethylhexane-2,5 -diol was instilled into the conjunctival sac of 3 Vienna White rabbits. Animals then were observed for 21 days. Irritation was scored by the method equivalent or similar to OECD guideline 405.

Severe, partially non reversible eye damage was observed after treatment with mean socres of 1 (cornea), 0.3 (iris), 2.3 (conjunctivae) and 1.8 (chemosis). The substance was thus classified as severely eye damaging. [BASF, 1989]

Effects on eye irritation: highly irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the results obtained in skin irritation study with rabbits, the test substance has not to be classified according to Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD) and to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP, GHS).

Based on the results obtained in eye irritation study with rabbits the test substance has to be classified with respect to eye irritation, Xi; R41 "Irritant; Risk of serious damage to eyes" according to Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD) and cat. 1, H318 "Causes serious eye damage" according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP, GHS).
