Description of key information

Based on the result of a  28-day study for ready biological degradability and data on the hydrolysis products ethanol and oxalic acid it is concluded that DEO is readily biodegradable.

Additional information

In the 28-day study for ready biological degradability (according to OECD test guideline 301D and GLP), the degradation of 67.9 % of the test substance Diethyloxalate was attained at the end of the study, but the 10-day window was failed. The criterion "passing the 10 -day window" does not apply for DEO since the degradation of the substance is characterized by a two-step process: hydrolysis to oxalic acid and ethanol (as demonstrated, e.g. in the hydrolysis study and algae study) and subsequent biological degradation of the hydrolysis products (ethanol and oxalic acid are known to be readily biodegradable).Therefore, it is concluded that DEO is readily biodegradable.
