Description of key information

Depending on local conditions, inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when the test substance is introduced in appropriately low concentrations.
EC10 (17 h) = 210 mg/L (Pseudomonas putida, DIN 38412 part 8)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
210 mg/L

Additional information

The toxicity of 2-dimethylaminoethyl acrylate on microorganisms was determined in two different studies using Pseudomonas putida and activated sludge from industrial sewage treatment plant (STP), respectively. The first investigation was conducted according to DIN 38412, part 8. In this study a marginal growth inhibition of Pseudomonas putida was demonstrated (EC10 = 210 mg/L) after 17 hours of exposure. In the second study no effect on the respiration rate of activated sludge from a STP was determined up to the highest test concentration of 1000 mg/L. However, since the test inoculum was taken from a industrial STP it cannot be excluded that the bacteria were already adapted to the test substance. Nevertheless, 2-dimethylaminoethyl acrylate hydrolyses into acrylic acid (CAS# 79-10-7) and 2-dimethylamino ethanol (CAS# 108-01-0). In a test with domestic activated sludge according to guideline ISO 8192 the EC20 for acrylic acid was determined to be 900 mg/L. No toxicity of 2-dimethylamino ethanol was observed using Pseudomonas putida (EC10 > 8000 mg/L) (Val. 4, original document not available).

In conclusion, the results of 2-dimethylaminoethyl acrylate and the corresponding hydrolysis products showed that depending on local conditions, an inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is unlikely when the test substance is introduced in appropriately low concentrations.
