Details on study design:
A random sample of 113 was drawn from the participants of the German Environmental Survey 1990/92. The selected subjects were instructed on how to use the sampler and then wore the sampler over a period of seven days. Sampling was conducted close to the breathing zone of the subjects. At the end of the sampling period, the sampler's collector surface was covered with the lid provided by the manufacturer for this purpose, the sampler was wrapped in aluminium foil and sent to the laboratory for analysis. Subjects were asked to fill in a specific questionnaire. The diffusive samplers were analysed by a gas chromatographic procedure according to the German VDI guideline.

Results and discussion

Results:
The concentration of methyl benzoate was above the limit of quantification in 35 of 113 samples (31%). The geometric mean of inhalation exposure was 1.8 µg/m3 (confidence interval of 1.6 to 2.1 µg/m3). The 95 percentile of inhalation exposure was 7 µg/m3.

Conclusions:
Methyl benzoate was found in the air of 31% of homes. Subjects were exposed to a geometric mean of 1.8 µg/m3.
