Description of key information

Further testing on the terrestrial toxicity of methyl benzoate is not required as the exposure assessment (see Chapter 9) based on PNECsoil(screen) does not indicate the risk for terrestrial compartment (the RCR of the terrestrial compartment is well below 1 and all the supported uses are therefore assessed to be safe). Available experimental data are not adequate for use in the hazard assessment.

Additional information

Two studies were found that investigated effects of methyl benzoate on the germination of lettuce seeds (Reynolds 1989) or apple pollen (Hamilton-Kemp et al. 1991). In the first study, a 50% inhibition of germination of lettuce seeds over a period of 72 hours was observed at a concentration of 109 mg/L of substance in the agar on which the seeds were placed. In the second study, a 50% inhibition of apple pollen was observed when pollen was exposed via the vapour phase to a concentration of 130 µg/L over a period of 90 minutes. Since the studies were not conducted in accordance with protocols for standard tests of toxicity to terrestrial plants, the observed effect levels are inadequate for use in the hazard assessment.
