Experimental data for Diisononyl adipate (CAS 33703-08-1, DINA) are available investigating the short-term toxicity to fish, aquatic invertebrates and algae. No effects on fish, aquatic invertebrates or algae were observed up to the limit of water solubility (0.0032 mg/L). With high probability DINA is acutely not harmful to aquatic organisms.

DINA did not cause inhibition of respiration in a study according to ISO guideline 8192 with activated sludge microorganisms as inoculum (EC20 (30 min) > 1000 mg/L). Thus, the overall potential to cause inhibition of activated sludge microorganisms is low and significant inhibition of degradation processes in sewage treatment plants is not to be expected.

Experimental data investigating the long-term toxicity to algae and invertebrates are available for DINA and the suitable read across substance Bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (CAS 103-23-1), respectively. No effects on survival and reproduction up to the solubility of the substances in water were observed for both algae and invertebrates. The available data indicate that long-term toxicity to aquatic organisms in the range of its water solubility is not to be expected.
