Under the conditions of a short term exposure to fish, the test of the 4,4’-DDS induced no lethal effects in carp at or below 100 mg/l (96h-LC0 = 100 mg/l).

For a long term toxicity evaluation on aquatic invertebrates, the test revealed that the 4,4’-DDS did not affect reproduction of Daphnia magna at 0.22 mg/l after 21 days of exposure (21 -day NOEC for reproduction = 0.22 mg/l). And a 21-day LOEC for reproduction of 0.46 mg/l was found. At the highest test concentration of 1.0 mg/l, this caused complete mortality of parental daphnids.

Under the conditions of the activated sludge respiration inhibition test, 4,4’-DDS was slightly toxic to waste water (activated sludge) bacteria. The EC50 was above the highest loading rate tested, a loading rate of 1000 mg/l (EC50 > 1000mg/l).

Based on the growth and reproduction toxicty test with freshwater algae, the EC50 is 2.7 mg/l (based on specific growth rate). The NOEC is 0.22 mg/l based on cell number.
