Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriately low concentrations.

The sensitivty of 1-methylpiperazine to microorganisms was tested in two studies. A respiration respiration inhibition test with domestic activated sludge was performed similar to OECD TG 209. No effect to sludge respiration was observed to be 1000 mg/L nomimal during 30 minutes of exposure in these tests. The 30-min EC50 was greater than 1000 mg/L (BASF AG, 1989, report no. 1.0336). In a growth inhibition test with Pseudomonas putida according to Bringmann & Kühn (1980) which is very similar to DIN 38412. part 8. For Pseudomonas putida a 16-h EC10 was derived of 197.7 mg/L. According to Table R.10-6 of the REACH guidance R.10 (ECHA, 2008), the test according to Bringmann & Kühn should only be used if no other tests are available. The PNECmicro-organisms for 1-methylpiperazine will therefore be based on the observed NOEC of 1000 mg/L.
