Justification:

Assessment of PBT/vPvB Properties

PBT/vPvB screening criteria have been used to assess whether the substance may potentially fulfil the PBT or vPvB criteria.

   Persistence Assessment

Tetrahydro-2-methylfuran is not readily biodegradable and the chemical structure of is not suggestive of a hydrolytic degradation mechanism. Therefore, the criteria for P/vP may be met.

Bioaccumulation Assessment

Tetrahydro-2-methylfuran has low potential for bioaccumulation so the criteria for bioaccumulation are not met. The substance is not B or vB.

 Toxicity Assessment

Environment:

The available short term studies in fish, invertebrates and algae resulted in reliable E(L)C50 values of =100 mg/l. No effects were seen in a reliable long-term limit test in invertebrates (Daphnia magna) resulting in NOECrepro=120 mg/l (measured, arithmetic mean) and the algal NOECgrowth rateis =104 mg/l (measured, geometric mean) in a reliable study. Therefore the criteria for Toxicity based on aquatic ecotoxicity (NOEC <0.01 mg/l) are not met.

Mammals:

The available data indicate that the substance is not classified for specific target organ toxicity, carcinogenicity, mutagenicity or reproductive and developmental toxicity in mammals (See Section 5.9). The criteria for T based on mammalian effects are therefore not met

The registered substance may meet the criteria for P/vP, but does not meet the criteria for B, vB or T. Therefore, the substance is not PBT or vPvB.
